Sakura Picnic in Tokyo: Tips!

Getting to experience sakura season, aka cherry blossom season is Japan is an experience in itself, but having a sakura themed picnic to go along with it? Sign me up! Here’s some tips if you want to host your own picnic in Japan during the cherry blossom season. Or anytime really, Japan is gorgeous every day 😉

1: Bring your own trash bag

Japan doesn’t have trash cans anywhere. And I really mean anywhere. Sometimes you can find a trashcan at a public park, but it is rare so be ready to take your trash home so you can dispose of it later.

2: Check if it’s a reserved area or not

Some park areas in Japan are reservation only. Make sure to check the signs if you’re in the right area!

3: Prepare for wind

It can get quite windy during the cherry blossom season. While this makes for stunning views with all the petals blowing everywhere, it can also lift your tarp of the ground and ruin your picnic. Bring some heavier items to put on the corner of your blanket so everything stays in place

4: Be mindful to your neighbors

Music is not allowed in some areas! In general, try to keep your noise down and be mindful of your surroundings.

5: Bottoms up!

Drinking is totally allowed in public areas. However, when you’re on private grounds, it’s a little bit different. Parks like Shinjuku Goen are privately owned and have not allowed drinking on their properties in recent years.

6: Peace & quiet

The main parks are absolutely stunning, but can also get really crowded and chaotic. Totally go for it if this is your vibe, but if you want a little bit more of a peaceful picnic, branch outside of the major metropolitan Shinjuku area.

7: Seasonal treats

Stock up on seasonal cherry blossom treats at the nearest conbini or convenience store for your picnic. It makes it more special since they’re not available year round, and they’re super delicious too. (and pink and cute, we’ll have to give them extra points for that)

8: Posh Picnic

Want to go for a little bit more of a fancy route than the 7/11 snacks? Stop by the basements of department stores like Lumine, they will sell speciality bento boxes during the cherry blossom season. Perfect to spruce up your next picnic! They also have other (sweet) snacks like dango available.

I hope this prepares you for your next picnic endeavours!
